Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Instructions to Assessors

Evidence Guide

The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required skills and knowledge, range statement and the Assessment Guidelines for the Training Package.

Overview of assessment

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Evidence of the ability to:

undertake research, planning and consultation to develop, implement and evaluate strategies to conserve and re-establish natural systems for a specific location or area in accordance with organisation policies and procedures and legislative requirements

support conservation by identifying staff training needs and preparing community information materials.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure:

conservation and re-establishment of a natural system reflecting local requirements which is of sufficient breadth to demonstrate competency and consistency of performance.

Assessment must also ensure access to:

an area or location containing natural systems or components of these

resources and information relevant to the natural system

relevant information impacting on conservation of natural systems

relevant stakeholders.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

review of authentic conservation strategy showing evidence of consultation, implementation and review

oral and or written questioning to assess knowledge of natural systems and interrelationships between their components

portfolio containing evidence of research and consultation processes to compile an inventory of natural systems

third-party reports from a supervisor detailing appropriate work performed by the individual.

Guidance information for assessment

Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended. for example:

SISXRES505A Achieve sustainable land management.

Required Skills and Knowledge

Required skills

communication skills to:

consult and liaise with stakeholders and staff about the implementation of conservation strategies

seek feedback on the effectiveness of strategies

language and literacy skills to:

analyse data on conservation strategies

document an inventory of natural systems

prepare community information materials

numeracy skills to:

collect and analyse data to evaluate performance

develop strategies within organisational budgets

problem-solving skills to:

assess threats and opportunities

compare conservation strategies for similar environments and select appropriate strategies

monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of strategies and develop alternative strategies where appropriate

planning and organising skills to work within identified timeframes and budgets and in accordance with organisation policies and procedures.

Required knowledge

legislation to enable the responsible conservation and re-establishment of natural systems

organisational policies and procedures to:

collect and use information responsibly

evaluate and select conservation strategies and implement these according to organisational objectives

conservation principles to enable the responsible management of natural systems

research and analysis techniques to enable the collection and analysis of data for the development of appropriate conservation strategies

techniques for the re-establishment of environments and natural systems to enable organisational goals to be met

natural systems and interrelationships between components to enable the development of appropriate strategies to protect them

project-management techniques to monitor and evaluate strategies to conserve and re-establish natural systems

political and economic trends in relation to conservation issues to enable an accurate analysis of threats and opportunities.
